Local Government
Richfield Village exists as a chartered municipality within the boundaries of Richfield Township. The Township has a population of approximately 2,500 and the Village has approximately 3,650 residents. Village and Township public services are independently organized as follows: Richfield Village has a chartered form of government with a mayor and seven members of council. Village property owners pay no operating levies. There are no fire and police levies and there are no charges for rescue calls, brush chipping, road paving and resurfacing, and street lights.
Richfield Township is a less densely populated area that surrounds the Village. As a township it is governed by three trustees and the laws of the state of Ohio. Residents pay no charges for rescue and fire calls. Operating levies fund road maintenance and police and fire services for the township.
Taxation
Those who work in the Village of Richfield pay a 2% income tax to the Village. Those who live in the Township pay property tax to finance local services. Summit County Sales Tax is 6.75%

Replete with natural beauty, Richfield gives residents several park choices. Within its 25 square mile borders exist two community parks, two county parks and the western rim of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Several walking trails are also available.
Community Parks
- Richfield Woods Park has baseball diamonds, horseshoes, a playground, sand pit volleyball, small basketball court, soccer fields, and a stocked pond. It has two pavilions with grills that can be reserved.
- Eastwood Preserve is a passive park that is used for hiking and fishing. Inside the park is a community garden.
- The Carter-Pedigo Hiking Trails are approximately 1.25 miles in length, with steps up and down ravines, bridges, and overlook seating to take in nature and relax.
- Richfield Heritage Preserve is a 336-acre hidden treasure with lakes, streams and wooded trails. It is the site of the Jim Kirby house and water-powered millwheel, which is on the National Register of Historic Landmarks.
Metro Parks
- Furnace Run Park offers walking paths, wild flower area, lake, sledding hills and kite flying meadows. This 889-acre Summit County MetroPark is an ideal location for family picnics and entertaining, providing picnic tables, grills, and an enclosed pavilion.
- Daffodil Trail, another Metropark, takes its name from the stunning display of daffodils each spring. Its ravine trails are perfect for a scenic hike.
Cuyahoga Valley National Park
The Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area preserves over 33,000 acres of land along 22 miles of the Cuyahoga River. Jutting into the east side of Richfield, the park is home to spectacular displays of fall foliage, lush spring wild flowers, open meadows, forests, and rushing streams. Historic buildings and archeological sites are found throughout the park. It also contains two downhill skiing areas, four golf courses, bike and hike trails, and sponsors organized activities all year.
Recreation Activities for residents of all ages are provided by the Richfield Recreation Department.
The whole community enjoys free summer band concerts and the annual Easter egg hunt. Other activities focus on special interests, and their minimal fees cover program expenses.
Youth Sports Leagues
Volunteers run the Revere baseball/softball leagues and the Revere soccer league.
Senior Center
Richfield’s Senior Center is open daily offering programs, games, exercise classes, crafts, entertainment and parties. The human resource commission operates a minivan once a week, picking up seniors from their homes, and taking them to shop, do banking, or out to restaurants. Volunteers lend assistance for this free service.
Library
In 2001 the Richfield Branch of Summit County Libraries moved into a new home, located in the center of town. Its architecture and decor create a theme that ties in with the wildlife that might visit the lake, just a short distance from the building. The 12,000 square foot facility houses approximately 39,000 books, 116 periodicals, 22 computers with research databases and free internet access and many audio and video media. Materials can be ordered by phone or internet from the county library system and picked up close to home at the Richfield branch.
Cultural & Entertainment Centers
Summer theater performs at the Western Reserve Playhouse. The playhouse, appropriately housed in an historic barn near Revere High School, produces three plays or musicals each summer. The playhouse also offers a theater workshop for children. This workshop ends its session with a play in August.
Antique shops abound in Richfield and the neighboring communities, making the area an antique hunter’s delight. Because of Richfield’s central location, other cultural and entertainment events are within a 45 minute drive. Most notably and especially nearby is the Blossom Music Center, the summer home for the world renowned Cleveland Orchestra serenely situated in a grove of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
